Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) is one of the strands offered to incoming Grade 11 students in Senior High school (K-12) here in the Philippines.
This strand focuses on enhancing the student skills in reading, writing, and speaking. Furthermore, it focuses on the study of societal issues and changes as well as in human behavior.
The people who choose this strand are likely wanted to be the members of society in which they can interact with a large number of individuals.
So, for the learners who take this strand, can one day aspire to work as; a journalist, lawyer, teacher, author, writer, editor, politician, psychologist, cultural anthropologist, or a social worker.
What are the subjects can you learn from this strand?
Specialization subjects:
- Discipline and Ideas of Social Sciences
- Introduction to world religions and belief system
- Discipline and Ideas in the Applied of Social Sciences
- Philippine Politics and Governance
- Community Engagement, Solidarity and Citizenship
- Creative Non-Fiction
- Creative Writing
- Trends, Network and Critical thinking in the 21st century
- Reading and Writing
- Oral Communication
- Introduction to society, culture and politics
These subjects are focusing about language, speech and events. But, it does not mean you won’t be able to encounter Mathematics and Science again. You will take them most likely on your 1st semester for being 11th grader, but it always depends on what school you are from.
For Mathematics course, you will take General Mathematics, and Statistics and Probability. For Science, it has Earth and life Science, and Physical Science.
Though, they are not that difficult since they do not belong to the specialization subject of the said strand.
What are the advantages when taking HUMSS strand?
1. It enhances your writing, speaking, reading and listening skills.
2. It awakens your confidence/self-esteem.
3. It improves our logical and critical thinking.
4. It help us to be creative in our own ways.
5. It builds up your communication skill to talk with other people, especially when you are shy or introvert type of person.
Are there any disadvantages when taking HUMSS strand?
For me, there are no disadvantages in this strand. It is just that they looked down on it, saying it is just easy as a peas since we do not deal with such as numbers and equations.
For their information, we are always dealing with doing essays, report presentation, acting, public speaking and other related performing activities in this strand. The students who choose this strand does not mean they are weak in Math and Science, it is just that maybe they have a course related to this strand in college. Moreover, Math and Science is not part of our specialization subjects.
Our focus is to understand the other people's perspective and situation about; their cultures, languages they've used, and the histories behind it.

Why did I choose HUMSS?
I also asked myself why did I even choose HUMSS.
I'm not even good at any written tasks (poem, reaction paper, essay). I don't have much knowledge about religions/beliefs. And I have limited vocabulary words in English. But somehow, I want to improve my weak points as an individual.
Though, being a HUMSS student is not all about confidence and improving our skills. It also gives me some knowledge of how the government system works - Republic acts, politics, different cultures, and the society.
There is one time that I want to be a teacher - who is teaching History or Araling Panlipunan (AP). I somehow got interested in Philippine history (For the first time in forever) because of my teacher, who teaches so well. So, that is one of my reason why it encourages me to take HUMSS.
And another thing, I planned to be part of PMA (Philippine Military Academy) school, but sadly, I wasn't able to take a test due to the COVID-19 pandemic. So, I'm mostly stuck right now on what course I should take after I graduate from SHS.
However, It doesn't mean that I regret taking this strand. This strand helps me to build up my relationship with my classmates and teachers. Every time you need help physically, mentally, and emotionally - they are always there for you. They will always lend their ears about the situation you are in, listen to the problems you are having trouble with, and they will always say the things you wanted to hear the most. They are not the kind of people you called "plastic" or the ones who pretend they are good people. But in this strand, they will say it straight back to you of what is the truth. They will make your eyes open to reality. It may be sometimes hurt you from the words they've said, but you will never meet this kind of people who worries and cares about you - more like your other family member.
What I wanted to say is that I feel grateful that I've met people like them. Never once in my whole life that I put my head on their shoulders to cry and lean on it. I've always been alone and never been open to other people before besides my family.
By the way, most of my classmates are part of the LGBTQA+. So, they're mostly doing some crazy stuff, making a loud noise everywhere, doing some fashion shows (from the gay guys), and dancing the popular songs worldwide. But the thing is, they know how to make everyone happy, and it is one of the good points they have to themselves.
I know I might be out of the topic but, I am thankful to them that they became part of my life. They made the best person out of me.
